Guarana tea from Brazil

Guarana is derived from the seeds of Paullinia cupana, and is also known as Brazilian cocoa. It contains the chief alkaloid caffeine, in addition to small amounts of theophylline and theobromine.

The purported stimulant proprieties of guarana have generally been assumed to reflect the presence of caffeine.

However, the psychoactive properties of guarana may also be attributable to the relatively high content of other properties psychoactive components, including saponins and tannins.

The guarana seeds were used as a tonic and stimulant by the Amazon Indians, even before the discovery of Brazil.

Several studies have shown that guarana may be effective in treating obesity when it is used with ma huang. It is due to the fact the guarana stimulates the metabolism and suppresses the appetite.

Guarana may be toxic when used at high concentration.
