Black peppercorn tea

Black pepper belongs to the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit (berries) that are usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning.

The black pepper (Piper nigrum L) vine and its extracts have been used as a folk medicine in a variety of cultures and are the source of the most commonly used spice worldwide. Black pepper is one of the most popular spice product in oriental countries, largely used as flavoring agent in food and tea.

Many physiological effects of black pepper, its extracts or its bioactive compound, piperine, have been reported in recent decades. Piperine is the active principle of black pepper and long pepper (Piper longum L.). This is also the principal alkaloid of these plants. The piperine content is 3-9% and 3-5% (on dry weight basis) in P. nigrum and P. longum respectively.

By stimulating the digestive enzymes of the pancreas, piperine enhances digestive capacity and significantly reduces gastrointestinal food transit time.

Black pepper tea is a common remedy for coughs and sore throats in Ayurveda. It is usually made with ground black pepper and can be flavored with ginger, lemon, honey and other ingredients.
