Liquorice tea good for your stomach

Liquorice or licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.) is a perennial plant of the family Fabaceae. Liquorice is a herb that people have used for thousands of years to treat a variety of ailments.

Liquorice root contains a variety of components including sugars, flavonoids, sterols, amino acids, resins, starch, essential oil and saponins. It is composed mainly of saponins glycyrrhizic acid or glycyrrhizin (C42 H62 O16).

Liquorice is effective against gastrointestinal problems by repairing the inner layer of the stomach and cleansing the respiratory system by increasing the production of mucus.

An extract of liquorice containing glabridin and glabrene, which are flavonoids present in liquorice root. They were effective in relieving stomach discomfort. The extract reduced nausea, stomach pain, and heartburn.

Furthermore, other extracts of the liquorice root have been tested in the treatment of gastritis induced by Helicobacter pylori.
