Barberry herbal drinks

Barberry is perennial shrub that reaches 10 feet. It has smooth gray bark, long spine and hanging clusters of bright yellow flowers that bloom in spring.

Tea made from the barberry fruit or the root bark is used to treat fever sore throats, diarrhea and intestinal disorders.

The ancient Egyptians relied on it to prevent plague, a use that was probably beneficial considering the herb’s antibiotic action.

An infusion of its bark, made with boiling water is useful in jaundice from congestion liver, with furred tongue, lowness of sprit and yellow complexion.

Barberry juice is especially desirable to mix with sweet or insipid fruits in preserves or jellies.

The syrup from the barberry mixed with water and other juices makes a pleasant, cooling drink.

A compress made from an herbal infusion may use as traditional method for treating eye problems.

To prepare tea form the berries pour one cup of boiling water over one to two spoons of the ripe berries. Let steep for 15 minutes and then strain.
